STEEL TOPPING CEREMONY(06/28/06)
By Connie Haas Zuber/Fort Wayne Magazine

Modern technology and ancient customs mingled June 28 at the topping out ceremony for Fort Wayne Newspapers' new press building on West Main Street at Van Buren Street.

The 47,000-square-foot building will house a 60-foot-tall, six-tower printing press, part of the $34.8-million expansion by the newspaper publishing company jointly owned by The News-Sentinel and The Journal Gazette.

Larry Weigand, president and owner of Weigand Construction, explained why the topping out ceremony which formally places the final steel beam at the highest level of the new building is an important milestone for big construction projects by explaining why that beam is hoisted into place topped by an American flag and a tree.

The press building is being built. The curve of the window arch on the south side is being put into place. Rails at the top of the steel will hold a crane used for maintenance and to move equipment.
The press will ship from Japan. It will take nearly two months to get here by ship and truck. In the meantime, we have to get the building done before the press can be built inside it.
The building must be 99 percent complete. The press hall has to be 100% complete to accept the press.
The press arrives by truck. There will be five trucks a day, arriving at night. Van Buren Street will be closed, and the press will be taken off the truck and into the new press building from the building's southeast side. The press will be built from west to east and from bottom to top.
