Woods: I’m not coming

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Mitch Woods said this afternoon he’s not going to be able to play for the Komets this year. It’s a combination of a good job opportunity and some other personal considerations. Woods is working as a youth care worker in his hometown of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. The job, he said, entails working with kids who have criminal backgrounds or who have been taken away from bad families.

“It’s anything from breaking up fights to group therapy work,” Woods said. “You try to help them develop social skills or work abilities so they can do something productive with their lives. It’s a good challenge. For some of these kids, this is just a stop on the way, but there are a couple you can make a huge impact on. They haven’t had too many healthy male role models in their lives.”

Woods said the job is the equivalent of going to school for him because it can open other, larger opportunities in the future.

“Coming back to Fort Wayne was a chance to end on my own terms, and unfortunately, that didn’t happen,” Woods said. “I had high hopes for this season, but maybe this is a blessing. You never know when the next punch could lead to a concussion or I could hurt a knee by throwing myself into the boards. I’m trying to put a positive spin on it. It wasn’t an easy decision.”

This possibly opens up a spot for a rookie on the Komets’ forward lines. When Woods came to the Komets in 2007, no one knew who he was. Maybe this will give someone like local product Lincoln Kayleigh Schrock a shot. They are both the same type of player.

Congrats to Chuck Itt

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Better known to bloggers as Chuckitt. He is going to receive the Colin Lister Award at the Northeast Indiana Baseball Association’s Hall of Fame banquet on Jan. 29. Chuck is a long-time player, coach and manager for the Wallen Little League, and the award honors “dedication to the game of baseball and its historic legacy.” As someone who has won it previously, I saw welcome to the club. This is an outstanding selection!

Update on Woods

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I talked to David Franke, and he said nothing is finalized yet. Mitch has a really good job in a Youth Work Release Program and he’s trying to get a leave of absence for the year. The leave was supposedly approved earlier in the summer, but now something has changed.

‘We’re still hopeful he can get his waiver and protect his job up there,” Franke said. “We’ll know more by Thursday or Friday.”

Franke also said he heard from Travis Whitehead today, and the center has been asked to stay with Norfolk at least throught the weekend. It’s doubtful Whitehead will show up on time for the start of training camp on Monday.

Roster updates

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Rick Varone is back in Fort Wayne from camp with Lake Erie and is getting checked out for what the Komets hope is a minor rib injury.

Evgeny Saidachev is also back in Fort Wayne after going to camp with Worcester and scoring a goal and an assist in two exhibition games.

Mathieu Curadeau also went to Worcester’s camp and is going to sign with Kalamazoo.

Maxime Gravelle is going back to college.

Rick Whitehead is still in Norfolk’s camp.

Former Komet Mike Butters has been reassigned from Norfolk’s GM to a scout and had a year added to his contract.

I couldn’t make this up

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I was watching Letterman Wednesday night when he did a bit about new Fall TV shows.

NEW FALL SHOWS
- Thursdays at 10 PM on CBS — “ABBACADAVER” — This spine-tingling forensics show follows supergroup ABBA as they solve murders in Sweden

- Fridays at 9 PM on NBC — “SUGAR AND SPICE” — Rookie police officers Hank Sugar and Carla Spice are gonna clean up Miami’s crime scene —- if they don’t kill each other first.”

- Tuesdays at 9 PM on TLC — “QUALITY ASSURANCE PURPROSES” — It’s the ultimate in reality television when TLC airs two unedited hours of live phone calls from a Bombay customer service hotline

- Mondays at 9 PM on CBS — “STRETCH MARK” — After a freak yoga accident, Mark Julian (Tim Daly) sets out to clean up the streets by battling evil-doers using his vast knowledge of yoga moves

- Fridays at 9 PM on BRAVO — “FONDUEL” — In the latest reality sensation from the Bravo Network, two upper middle class couples in suburban Atlanta compete to see who can host the most entertaining fondue party

- Saturdays at 8:30 PM on ABC: “STAINMASTERS” — After an industrial accident at the DuPont Carpet Factory, employee Mike Burgess (played by Jason Alexander) gains the supernatural ability to remove the most stubborn stains form floor coverings.

I wonder if Jason Alexander can get a really solid suntan going?
