Fan in the Stands update

February 9th, 2010
Chuck Itt will be Wendy Bartle’s guest for this week’s edition of “Fans in the Stands” during the first intermission of the Komets Game of the Week broadcast. Chuck is a devoted fan of the Komets who, last fall, refused to let cancer break his yearly tradition of attending every Komets home opener for the past 38 years. Among other things, Chuck will discuss his memories of the Komets “magical season” of 1972-1973 and his friendships with Komets players from that era. On January 29th, Chuck was privileged to receive the Colin Lister Award from the Northeast Indiana Baseball Association for his involvement with youth baseball in the area. The award honors Mr. Colin Lister, former owner of the Komets, who shared Chuck’s interest in the summer pastime. Chuck is also an avid collector of John Wayne memorabilia, and owns a copy of the actor’s little-known 1937 hockey movie “Idol of the Crowds”. Tune in to Comcast channel 55 or Verizon Fios channel 25 on Wednesday, February 10 at 8 PM or Thursday, February 11 at 4 AM or 12 Noon to learn more about this dedicated sports fan, youth role-model, and loyal Komets supporter.

Here’s a question

February 8th, 2010

I don’t know the answer to this and maybe some of  you might: Are there that many good junior players out there to stock all these new teams? And where are they coming from?

Bus trip to Dayton

February 8th, 2010

On Saturday, Feb. 20 will leave Komet Kuarters at 3:30 p.m. The cost is $30 per person and includes game ticket. No alcohol is permitted on the bus, but they will be stopping for dinner at Golden Corral on the way. You can sign up at Komet Kuarters. If you have any questions, call Dennis Schebig at 471-3227 during weekdays or 749-2022 during the evenings. There must be at least 55 people signing up or the money will be refunded.

They are now working on the second bus, and Dennis said there are about 25 seats left.

Talked to Michael Franke

February 8th, 2010

“I can’t comment on it much yet because the IHL has lease rights up there, and all that stuff has to be disseminated over the next week or so. I would assume we’ll have some kind of statement sometime in the next couple of days.

“I think with a team leaving the league, that’s always a negative thing. We have been and are working on other things for the future, too. It’s not as devastating as it might have been a couple of years ago. It’s not something we wanted to see happen, but with almost 20 percent unemployment rate up in that county, it was just a matter of time before a decision of this nature would have to be made. Their attendance over the last two, three years, has been pretty consistent, but to provide this level of entertainment, that’s not enough. They are usually in first or second place every year, and that costs money. I think it became evident to the owners that 2,800 people a game wasn’t getting it done for them.”

Maybe I’m joining the Nellies a little bit.

Komets fans picked the best

February 8th, 2010

You can read Brendan’s latest effort here. Also, thanks. I think.

Hey, if Wednesday’s game is postponed because of the snow, they will try to play the game on Thursday night.

Super Bowl hangover?

February 8th, 2010

And I’m not talking about foo-foo drinks, either. Everybody seems like they are a little groggy today from celebrating a little hard yesterday. Anybody else noticing this?

Book winner

February 7th, 2010

Dang it, I should have stuck with my original pick because Dwight Freeney was no factor after the first quarter, and Peyton really tightened up. He was short-arming the throws and throwing off his back foot.

Anyway, there were too many Colts’ homers in our contest, but Krackers463 came the closest with the score, predicting Saints 28-21, so they will get a copy of the book in two weeks or so. ColtsWin actually had the score right, but the wrong team winning.

Komets lose to Mallards

February 7th, 2010
One night after scoring nine goals at home, the Fort Wayne Komets couldn’t find the net on the road despite 39 shots. The Komets lost to Quad City 3-1 before 4,544 fans in Moline, Ill. The Komets have lost three of their last four road games and are 3-4 over their last seven games after a six-game winning streak.

Quad City scored first, 30 seconds after the opening face-off, as Chris Lipsett beat Tim Haun. The Komets tied the score halfway through the period on P.C. Drouin’s 15th goal of the season, but that was the last time Fort Wayne was able to beat Quad City goaltender Kyle Jones. After a scoreless second period, Quad City took the lead with 6:35 remaining in the third period when Justin White scored. The Mallards’ Mike Zbriger added an insurance goal in the final seconds into an open net.

The Komets out-shot the Mallards in every period and 39-21 for the game. Referee Brett Coulombe called only three minor penalties in the entire game. The Komets were unproductive in their two power-play chances.

This was Fort Wayne’s first loss in four trips to Quad City this season. The Komets are 7-1-1 overall against Quad City this season.
