With a new ballpark (Parkview Field), a new name (TinCaps) and a new roster, there are questions aplenty for the Fort Wayne baseball team this summer.
For example: How good - and how healthy - is Allan Dykstra?
The San Diego Padres feel positive about the answers, as they drafted the Wake Forest product with their 2008 first-round selection (23rd overall) and gave him a $900,000 signing bonus.
The 6-foot-5-inch first baseman had his right hip surgically repaired after a tumble he took playing high school basketball, but at Wake Forest, he missed just one game in three years.
Dykstra played seven games at Lake Elsinore, Calif., last summer after being drafted and quickly showed ability, knocking in 10 RBIs in 24 at-bats. According to Baseball America, Dykstra “features the plus-plus raw power and plate discipline that the Padres covet.”
He hit .292 last summer while striking out just seven times.
TinCaps manager Doug Dascenzo has Dykstra penciled in at first base, as Dykstra is just one of three first-round draft picks who will see substantial action in Fort Wayne.
Shortstop Drew Cumberland and pitcher Nick Schmidt also carry high expectations of the parent club.
Fort Wayne fans may want to catch Dykstra in action early this season, as San Diego may deem his ability at the plate worthy of a promotion to Class AA San Antonio with some strong production this spring at Parkview Field.
