Achievements: Selected member of Indiana Choral Directors Association Indiana All-State Choir for 2007-08 and 2008-09; ISSMA State Gold Medal finalist 2006, 2007, 2008; Dwenger Academic Excellence Award 2007 and 2008; Show Choir captain the last two years, Advanced Choir class president this year, state finalist in speech in 2008, among many honors.
Activities: Active at school in varsity speech, theater, show choir and liturgical choir. Community-service work has included working with Habitat for Humanity, The Towne House retirement community, school “Saints on the Move” service project, and volunteering to assist elderly residents of Saint Anne Home and Retirement Community from September to December 2008.
Comments: “Emily's voice is exceptional for one so young,” Sterling Sentinel judge Dorothy Kittaka said. “It was thrilling to hear her clear tone quality as she sang a very difficult coloratura aria with poise and ease.”
Plans: Smith intends to double-major in vocal performance and music education in college. She hopes to attend graduate school to study vocal performance before pursuing a career in opera or Broadway-style performance and later possibly being a college music teacher.
