November 6, 1987
Principles concerning trade and investment relations between Mexico and the United States are established.

February 1988
Negotiations begin under the U.S. - Mexico Framework Agreement.

June 10, 1990
President Bush and Mexican President Salinas endorse the idea of a comprehensive free trade agreement between the United States and Mexico and direct their trade ministers to do preparatory work.

February 1991
Bush, Salinas and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announce their intention to pursue a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

June 12, 1991
NAFTA negotiations formally launched in Toronto with trilateral meeting of trade ministers. Nineteen working groups convene.

August 12, 1992
Tentative North American Free Trade Agreement initialled.

September 8, 1992
Legal draft of NAFTA is published.

September 18, 1992
Bush notifies Congress of his intention to sign NAFTA. Congress has 90 days to study the agreement and recommend changes.

December 17, 1992
NAFTA is signed.

May 27 & June 23, 1993
Canada's Parliament is first to ratify NAFTA.

September 14, 1993
NAFTA "side deals" signed.

November 1993
NAFTA ratified by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and the Mexican Senate.

January 1, 1994
The North American Free Trade Agreement takes effect.
