  • What: 2008 elections for county, state and federal offices.
  • When: The polls are open 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4.
  • Who: Registered voters will select candidates for local offices in Fort Wayne, New Haven and Woodburn. For information on the candidates and to vote in straw polls, go to www.news-sentinel.com.

Important dates and deadlines
  • Oct. 6: Voter registration closes for the 2008 general election.
  • Oct. 6-17: Early voting available 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the City-County Building, 1 E. Main St.
  • Oct. 20-Nov. 1: Early voting available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays at the City-County Building, 1 E. Main St.
  • Oct. 27: Deadline to request an application to vote absentee-by-mail.
  • Nov. 3: Deadline to cast an absentee ballot at the City-County Building, 1 E. Main St. (8 a.m. to noon).
  • Nov. 4: Election Day. Polls are open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.

Three ways to find your polling place
  1. Go to www.indianavoters.com and click on "Polling Place."
  2. Select the county in which you are registered to vote on the pull-down menu beside "County."
  3. Type in your last name, first name and date of birth.
  4. Click on "Find."
OR
  1. Go to www.acimap.us.
  2. Click on "Public Access" at the bottom left.
  3. Click on "I accept the terms of the aforementioned disclaimer" if you accept the terms.
  4. Click on "GIS Data Viewer." A map of the county will appear.
  5. Click on the "Search" tab in the upper-right portion of the screen.
  6. Click on "Search by Parcel Address."
  7. Enter address information and click on "Search." Election district information will appear on the right side of the screen. Scroll down to the bottom of that window to find the address of your polling location.
OR
  1. Call Voter Registration at 449-7154.

How do you work this thing?

  1. A poll worker activates the machine with a card.
  2. Candidates' names and the offices they're running for appear on the screen.
  3. Press the button next to the candidate of your choice. An "X" will appear in the box next to the candidate's name. Press the button again to cancel your selection.
  4. Advance or review the screen by following the instructions at the bottom of the screen. If hearing- or visually impaired, ask a poll worker for assistance.
  5. To cast a write-in vote, ask a poll worker for assistance.
  6. When completely finished voting, press the red button.

To vote absentee
  • In person: Beginning Oct. 6, any registered voter may vote absentee without a reason in Room 136 of the City-County Building, 1 E. Main St. The Election Board will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Oct. 17. From Oct. 20 to Oct. 31, the office will remain open until 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and until 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, the office will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Nov. 1. On Monday, Nov. 3, voters can cast absentee ballots from 8 a.m. to noon.
  • By mail: Request an application to vote absentee online at www.allencounty.us or by calling 449-7329. The deadline to do so is Oct. 27.

Election Day help needed
  • Poll workers: Call Allen County Republican Party headquarters at 422-1554 or Democratic Party headquarters at 478-8239 for more information. Pay ranges from $85 to $135.
  • Couriers: The Election Board needs couriers to work Election Day from 9 a.m. to noon delivering absentee reports to various precincts in the county. The pay is $35 plus mileage. Call 449-3908.

Other useful info
  • New registration/change of address: The deadline to register or change your address in time to vote in the Nov. 4 election is Oct. 6. Call 449-7154 for more information.
  • Voting location changes: Precinct 314 has moved to Fort Wayne Area Youth for Christ, 2825 Hillegas Road. Precincts Perry A and Perry B have moved to Resurrection Lutheran Church, 14318 Lima Road.
  • Photo ID law: All voters must provide a government-issued photo ID as proof of identity before voting. An Indiana driver's license, Indiana photo ID card, military photo ID or U.S. passport is accepted. For more information, go to www.photoid.in.gov.
  • Booze ban: It is unlawful to sell alcoholic beverages on General Election day from 3 a.m. until the polls close at 6 p.m., according to Indiana Code 7.1-5-10-1.
  • What's open, what's not: All city and county government offices are open on Election Day. Mail will be delivered and trash collected. Check with your financial institution for banking hours. Fort Wayne Newspapers will remain open, as well.
  • Any more questions? Call 1-866-IN1-VOTE (1-866-461-8683). Voters also are encouraged to call to report suspected fraud or any physical obstacles to voting that they experience. Employees of the Secretary of State's office will staff the telephone line between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 4.
