Minimum Wage - Did You Know?
Minimum wage rates are established to protect workers and prevent salary discrimination. However, minimum wage varies among states, and there are even some that do not have minimum wage laws in effect.* Five states have no minimum wage law: Louisianna, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina.
* Six states and the U.S. Virgin Islands have minimum wage rates lower than the Federal rate: Wyoming, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arkansas, and Georgia.
* The majority of states have minimum wage rates higher than the Federal rate (27, plus the District of Columbia).
* Washington State has the highest rate at $8.40 per hour. Kansas has the lowest rate at $2.65 per hour. - Rates accurate as of 1/1/09
